The Long Island Marathon is an annual foot-race on long Island that you may be able to participate in when you are here with your 15 passenger van rental.

On your mark

When you are here with your 15 passenger rental van, you will learn that the Long Island Marathon has been taking place since the 1970s as the area’s premiere competitive running event. The event takes place the first Sunday in May. When the event was started in the early 1970s, there was only the 26.2 mile run that took place. In the 1980s, the Half Marathon was introduced and continues to thrive. Since then, you can also participate in the 10K race, 5K race, 10 mile run, and kids fun run.

Get set

The Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K Race all start at 8 a.m. on the first Sunday in May. Runners have 6 hours to complete the course before it is closed. If you would like to participate in any of the runs, except for the kids run, you can find an application online. In the days before the race, you need to go to the fitness expo that takes place at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale with your rental van to pick up your registration package. The expo also features local and national vendors that have running and athletic-related products and services. The expo is free and open to the public as well. Before the run, you are also welcome to attend the Pasta Party that takes place the Friday before to ensure you have plenty of carbs to run on. Tickets are free for runners and are $10 for up to 3 additional guests. All runners need to be ready for the race at 7:45 a.m. at the start line. While you run, you will find red and white pace signs along the road before the start line of the marathon, half marathon, and 10K course. In case of an emergency there are first aid stations located at various points in the race and volunteers are placed along the route. If you need to drop out of the race, please let a volunteer know.

For kids

When you are here with your van rental for 15 passengers, the KidzFunRun takes place on the Saturday before the marathon. It has races for kids of all ages and skill levels, even young children. All participants will receive a finisher medal.

How to get there

To get to the expo where all runners need to register, and where the Kidz Fun Run is held, you can take the Meadowbrook Parkway to Exit M4W (Nassau Coliseum Exit). Merge onto Charles Lindbergh Boulevard and continue west. The entrance to the Mitchel Athletic Complex is on the left side about ¼ mile after the first light. Some of the streets are closed for the various runs, so check out the official website to find out what is open and closed to get there with your 15 passenger van rental.

Better off cheering from the sidelines?

If you prefer to cheer from the sidelines when you are here with your 15 passenger van rental, there are many cheering sections along the route. Some of the locations include Post Avenue and Maple Avenue, Jericho Turnpike across from the Home Depot, Brush Hallow Road at the North Fork Theater, Wantagh Parkway and Old Century Road, Wantagh Parkway and Hempstead Turnpike, Wantagh Parkway and Sunrise Highway, and Carmen Avenue by the Capital One Bank.
