When he is caught, the bishop tells the police he gave Valjean the items, saving him. This one act inspired Valjean to do good deeds in his life.

Eight years later Valjean has broken his parole, but he has become a kind factory owner and mayor of a town. One of the workers at his factory becomes pregnant and looses her job. She is forced to leave her child with inn-keepers, who she believes are taking care of her little girl, Cosette. When Valjean finds out he played a role in this girl being taken away from her mother because he did not help her keep her job, he vows to get the child.

Valjean is able to save the child and takes her to Paris, where they escape into the masses of people.

Paris is burning

Years later the streets of Paris are in riots and there are uprisings all over the place. Students are barricading the streets and a revolution is underway. Throughout the rest of the play, there are interactions between Javert and Valjean, until finally, the end is met and this sad story is over.
