Current Exhibits
The Aztec EmpireOpen from October 15, 2004 to February 13, 2005 This exhibit re-creates the 15th century period of the ancient Mexican indigenous tribes: the Aztec and their traditional enemy, the Tarascan empire. A great number of art objects created by the various peoples of this time (the Postclassical era) are now on display for your viewing pleasure. As the Aztec empire expanded throughout the ages, an international style began to flourish, enabling various cultures of the empire to communicate with each other, sharing their stories and knowledge of deities and rituals. The Aztec Empire is divided into 12 themes, starting with the development stages, continuing on through the zenith of the Aztec society, right to the end of its power.
As a special feature to the Aztec Empire exhibition, the Sackler Center for Arts and Education at the Guggenheim is presenting Keith Haring: New Wave Aztec. In this exhibit you will see a diverse selection of Haring's drawings, objects and prints. Exhibit hours are Saturday to Monday 10 am to 5 pm and on Fridays from 10 am to 8pm. The Guggenheim will also be offering Public Programs including panel discussions on the Visual Anthropology of Keith Haring's Art, workshops for the family that focus on Life Lines in Haring's Art, and also student and educator workshops.
Kandinsky Gallery: An Inaugural Selection
This ongoing exhibition features paintings by the twentieth-century artist Vasily Kandinsky, who, throughout the years, has been closely linked to the history of the Guggenheim Museum. There are over 150 Kandinsky works in the Guggenheim Museum Permanent Collection. This exhibition traces Kandinsky's development as an artist, from his beginnings growing up in Moscow and Munich, to his later years in the Bauhaus, right up to final years of exile in Paris. Kandinsky has played a pivotal role in the development of abstract art, and has contributed to the art historical canon. He is both a theorist and a teacher; becoming one of the most influential artists of his time, and whose work still receives immense interest at the Guggenheim Museum.
The Solomon R. Guggenheim also offers an array of other exhibits, all masterfully present and documented. So why not take your New York exotic rental car over to the Guggenheim for an afternoon of culture and knowledge. You're brain will thank you!
